Based on the novel by Salvador Espriu, “Laia” is set in the imaginary town of Sinera, a fishing village inhabited by a number of extreme characters irremediably doomed to the adversities of fate. There lives Laia, a woman marked by an unhappy childhood spent in poverty. To get away her alcoholic mother, Laia accepts the marriage proposal of Quelot, a brutish and taciturn fisherman who from an early age has harbored a mix of love and hate for her. But nothing in her new life goes as Laia expected. Her new husband has no qualms about mistreating and demeaning her, as if she were his property.
