Synopsis

Historical documentary, narrated by Abel Folk and based on the research of Dr Lluïsa Pla, a historian, which reconstructs the decisive influence of the Girona family on the economic, social and cultural transformation of Catalonia in the 19th century. Through an approach that is both rigorous and accessible, it reveals the impact of their investments in infrastructure, canals and industries that permanently reshaped the country’s landscape. Bankers, patrons and builders of major infrastructure projects, they promoted titanic works such as the Urgell Canals, the railway networks, the Liceu Opera House, the University of Barcelona building, and parts of Barcelona Cathedral. Testimonies from leading experts provide context, interpretation and nuance to the trajectory of key figures in Catalan modernisation. A fascinating journey through history, economics and collective memory that sheds light on a legacy often unseen, yet essential to understanding the present.

A Brutal Media production, in co-production with La Xarxa and RTVE.
